I agree with plenty of what you said but a lot of the issues you discussed would go away on their own if we weren't taught from a young age that democracy is this great thing. This country is not (or wasn't supposed to be) a democracy at all. It is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC. There is a big difference. A democracy means majority rules, or 'mob rule' as some call it. So if you have a majority of insane people voting for insane things, everybody else is up shit creek. Whereas a Constitutional Repbublic protects individual rights AGAINST majority rules / mob rule. More protection of individual freedom solves a lot of your issues.

The house I grew up in had a toilet and a shower in the basement. I never thought there was anything unusual about it.

I lived in Munhall from 1965 to 1976 & never heard of Freedom House. I returned to my home state of NC & became an EMT for 12 years & only then did I learn about Dr. Safar & Freedom House. I am only 59 years old. I grew up in East McKeesport. Through the 70's & 80's. And I Graduated in 1983, from East Allegheny high School. I never knew A dark night. I always seen and heard the Steel Mills going all around. Now it's sad to see them all gone. My memories are in all those old places. Where Today, kids only hear us talking about it.

Nuns were the backbone of the Catholic education system. They took vows of poverty, and unlike priests, they actually lived that life. NYC as an example, had thousands of parishes amped each of those parishes generally had an elementary school. Because nuns were not paid a salary, tuition was often nonexistent. Parish collections paid for most expenses, and so, a Catholic school education was free. Elementary schools fed into Catholic high schools, which were not free, but highly regarded for their educational standards. Catholic colleges and universities often beckoned to complete 16 years of Catholic school education, which led to a vibrant culture of church going, practicing Catholics. The back story of how nuns were treated by the church is part of the story, but suffice it to say, that when they stopped teaching, elementary schools closed, as parents could not afford to pay tuition. This had a domino effect over decades, which eventually led to fewer people going to church at all, and many who were Catholic in name only.

I was a waitress at Norwin Diner in 1974-1975. I remember one day the owner asked myself and another waitress to pick the bugs out of the noodles that were in a large bucket. I walked out instead of doing that. I never ate there because I knew what went on in the back.

My mom’s brother was at USS American Bridge (Ambridge, Pa) Division on December 7th, 1941. Eighteen years old. The entire shift walked down to the USN Recruiting Office & joined up. Boss said “Good luck boys, you’re jobs will be waiting for you after the Victory” And they were.

Grew up in suburban Pittsburgh. Last visit 2005 for Mothers funeral. Have some old college chums and we get together every few years (Duquesne ‘76). This September will be in Lawrenceville which seems like a good choice. I will check this place out. 🎩
